Also, I remember playing Titanic with a tough-guy-looking colleague on the bow of a ship, which now is  a bittersweet memory.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThis time, TCB has created a new design based on 1930s Frisco Pants with suspender buttons.\u003cbr\u003eMy first question was, what exactly is Frisco? And what is the meaning behind those distinctive front pockets?\u003cbr\u003eUpon investigation, I discovered that Frisco is one of the old names for San Francisco.\u003cbr\u003eRather than a refined name, it felt like a word encompassing the port city, laborers, and the rough atmosphere of the West Coast.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eGold Rush.\u003cbr\u003ePorts.\u003cbr\u003eRailways. \u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003eWorkers who carry goods, do tough work, drink a lot.\u003cbr\u003eSmall towns that prosper around infrastructure works.\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\n\u003cbr\u003eMore than the name of a neatly maintained city, it's a name that evokes the smell of dust and sweat for me.\u003cbr\u003eContinuing researching about the origin of Frisco and the work pants, I encountered the word \"Dock Worker.\", a port worker.\u003cbr\u003eJust hearing it, I initially mistook it for \"Dog Worker.\"\u003cbr\u003eDock Worker. Dog Worker.\u003cbr\u003eFrom there,\u003cbr\u003e\"If that's the case, then TCB could be called Cat Worker Pants,\" and my usual cat-pun began.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eAnd another thing that caught my attention was the shape of the front pocket.The unique, large, round opening is apparently called a frogmouth pocket.\u003cbr\u003eEasy to put your hands in and easy to take out tools and small items. More than just a design choice, it's a shape created for workers.\u003cbr\u003eThinking about it that way, these pants suddenly connected with my memories.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eIf I had been wearing these Frisco Pants back in 1998, when I was working at the port, I might not have dropped the wrench from the ship and gotten yelled at by my boss.\u003cbr\u003eNo, I probably still would have been yelled at for other mistakes, haha.But if I had used suspender buttons to hold the pants up, my impersonation of Leonardo DiCaprio's Titanic scene at the bow of the ship would have definitely been more accurate and fun.  These pants are a TCB interpretation based on 1930s Frisco Pants.From port worker's pants to Cat Worker Pants.\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\n\u003cbr\u003e□Fabric\u003cbr\u003eThe fabric is a TCB original, designed based on the vintage Frisco pants we own.\u003cbr\u003eBoth the warp and weft threads use a straight 7-count single yarn blended with high-quality American cotton. Left-hand twill weave. It has a firm, substantial feel, yet is finished to be comfortable and easy to wear from the first wear. For the finishing touches, we use a brushing machine made by MARIO CROSTA of Italy. Instead of shaving the surface like typical paper brushing, this process raises the fibers gently, creating a soft, fluffy texture and a natural look. A nice feature is that it has a slightly vintage feel right from the start. The dyeing is done using sulfur dyeing. Since the Cat Head Jacket is based on coveralls from the 1930s and 40s, there is a slight chronological gap between the Cathead Jacket we make. However, I decided to embrace that discrepancy as part of the creative process.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eIf it hadn't been for that duck, I might never have examined these 1960s painter pants so closely. Upon closer inspection, I noticed decorative stitching on the back pockets and chain-stitching along the pocket openings. While the main seams feature the triple-stitched lap seams typical of painter pants, the back yoke is sewn with double stitching.\u003cbr\u003eCompared to pre-war coveralls or painter pants, the stitch spacing is noticeably wider. This brings me to a topic I often find myself discussing when talking about workwear.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eWhen manufacturing workwear in the 1960s, the focus wasn't just on durability; manufacturers were also prioritizing rationality and production efficiency.\u003cbr\u003eFor straight seams, they used chain-stitching, which eliminated the need to worry about running out of bobbin thread. High-stress areas were reinforced with triple stitching, while the back yoke—subject to relatively less strain—was double-stitched to conserve thread.Furthermore, since finer stitching takes longer to cover the same distance, they used wider stitch spacing to shave precious seconds off the sewing time.I actually counted the number of stitches per inch to see for myself. Compared to pre-war coveralls, these 1960s painter pants feature two fewer stitches per inch. While a difference of just two stitches might seem negligible, fewer stitches mean a longer distance can be sewn in the same amount of time, and less thread is consumed. A slight variation on a single pair becomes a significant difference when considering factory-scale production of hundreds or thousands of units.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThis kind of manufacturing efficiency ultimately created the distinctive look characteristic of that era—another reason why vintage workwear is so fascinating. This is one of the fascinating aspects of garments based on U.S. military designs: a simple change in color can make them look surprisingly elegant.\u003cbr\u003eIt would be interesting to pair them with refined shoes, though they would also look wonderful worn in until they take on a slightly weathered, lived-in feel.\u003cbr\u003eFor this release, I wore the pieces as a matching set—both top and bottom in unbleached denim—but combining either the jacket or the trousers with indigo denim would also be a great look.\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e----------\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003eDuring the product development of the Cat Face Pullover Shirt we released in Spring 2026, there was one item I absolutely wanted to create: M40 denim jacket, adopted by the US Army in 1940.\u003cbr\u003eIn the 1930s, highly decorative coveralls already existed in the civilian market. Compared to those, the M40 is the complete opposite in every sense. The decorative details are stripped away, making it simpler and more practical.\u003cbr\u003eUnlike the somewhat large and rough pockets seen on the M-35, this one is designed with more practicality in mind, retaining only the necessary functions. It truly feels like military supplied clothing.  Until now, I haven't been drawn to so-called WW2 chore coats with two-pockets, but this US Army one is different.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eIt's somehow rugged, somehow rational. I was drawn to the \"reasonable roughness\" unique to military surplus.\u003cbr\u003eSimilar to the Seamen series, we wanted these to be worn as a denim tux, and we also made the matching pants of which the base design is the US ARMY M-35 denim trousers adopted in the late 1930s.\u003cbr\u003eThey feature a wide, relaxed silhouette and a high rise. The design, which prioritized workability, feels surprisingly fresh from a modern perspective, and it's a model that balances fashion and practicality very well.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eTo reproduce the roughness and slubby texture seen on the vintage US ARMY fabric, TCB tried an approach of using recycled cotton for both the warp and weft threads. While recycled cotton is often discussed in the context of environmental considerations, it inevitably results in a rougher yarn. For brands that want a clean \u0026amp; neat look, it can be considered a difficult material to work with in a sense. However, for TCB, that unavoidable unevenness was ideal. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe cotton that was once made into yarn is now made into yarn again. The unevenness created by the manufacturing process ultimately strongly evokes the atmosphere of that era. Furthermore, the weft threads use vat-dyed gray yarn. While the indigo dye develops a vibrant blue, the color appears somewhat deep and muted, which is said to be why indigo was often used for the workwear at the time to conceal stains \u0026amp; dirts. Although the fabric has undergone sanforization, the amount of water used has been intentionally kept to a minimum.As a result, the fabric still holds some raw feel, and it looks bumpy \u0026amp; rough on a surface. Moreover, because anti-twist treatment has been applied, natural twisting will occur as you wear it. It's not a uniform, perfectly finished denim but it's somewhat rough, somewhat imperfect.
